Serkland Law Firm Names McNary a Shareholder

Kasey D. McNary has been named a shareholder in the Serkland Law Firm, which has offices in Fargo and Bismarck. 

A native of Williston, McNary graduated from Jamestown College with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree with distinction from the University of North Dakota School of Law, Grand Forks.  His practice is centered primarily on civil litigation where he focuses on commercial, business, and collection cases, as well as real estate matters, including foreclosures.  Before joining Serkland Law Firm in 2010, he was a law clerk for the East Central Judicial District in Fargo.

Serkland Law Firm has been named to the “Best Law Firms” listings for 2017 by U.S. News – Best Lawyers. The firm’s Fargo office was named to the Metropolitan Tier 1 ranking in Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights / Insolvency and Reorganization Law; Commercial Litigation; Family Law; Litigation – Banking & Finance; Litigation – Labor & Employment; Mediation; and Product Liability Litigation – Defendants.

Serkland Law Firm's Bismarck office was named to the Metropolitan Tier 2 ranking in Commercial Litigation, and the Fargo office was named to the Metropolitan Tier 2 ranking in Litigation - Bankruptcy; Litigation - Mergers & Acquisitions; Personal Injury Litigation - Defendants; and Product Liability Litigation - Plaintiffs.

The firm's Fargo office was named to the Metropolitan Tier 3 ranking in Personal Injury Litigation - Plaintiffs.

“Best Law Firms” rankings are based on a rigorous evaluation process that includes the collection of client and lawyer evaluations, peer review from leading attorneys in their field and review of additional information provided by law firms as part of the formal submission process. 

To be eligible for a ranking in a particular practice area and metro region, a law firm must have at least one lawyer who is included in Best Lawyers in that particular practice area and metro.

This year, Jack G. Marcil, Ronald H. McLean, Roger J. Minch, and Maureen Holman were named Best Lawyers in Fargo, and Rebecca S. Thiem was named Best Lawyers in Bismarck.   The methodology is described at http://bestlawfirms.usnews.com/methodology.aspx.

Serkland Law has thirteen lawyers in its Fargo and Bismarck offices.

Serkland Law Firm attorney Ronald H. McLean has been named the Best Lawyers 2017 Litigation - Labor and Employment “Lawyer of the Year” in Fargo.

Five attorneys of the 13-attorney Serkland Law Firm in Fargo and Bismarck have been listed in Best Lawyers in America® 2017, including McLean, who was named to the prestigious “Bet-The-Company Litigation” category.

Best Lawyers, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession, compiles its lists of outstanding attorneys by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers.

McLean is also selected for five other categories: Commercial Litigation, Litigation – Construction, Litigation – Labor & Employment, Litigation – Mergers & Acquisitions, and Litigation – Municipal.

Jack G. Marcil is listed in Arbitration, Mediation, Personal Injury Litigation, and Product Liability Litigation categories.

Serkland lawyers named to Super Lawyers List

Eight lawyers with the Serkland Law Firm were selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers lists. Super Lawyers recognizes attorneys who have distinguished themselves in their legal practice. The annual selections of no more than five percent of the lawyers in the state are made using peer nomination, independent research and peer evaluation.

Those named to the 2016 Great Plains Super Lawyers list and their primary practice areas include: Jack Marcil - alternative dispute resolution; Ronald McLean - general litigation; Roger Minch - creditor/debtor rights; Rebecca Thiem - business litigation; Maureen Holman - alternative dispute resolution; and Joseph Wetch – general litigation. In addition, Ronald McLean was selected to the 2016 "Top 5 Attorneys in North Dakota" list.

Those named to the 2016 Great Plains Rising Stars list and their primary practice areas include: Berly Nelson - banking: and Peter Zuger - general litigation.

Marcil Receives Distinguished Service Award

The “Richard S. Arnold Award for Distinguished Service and Lifetime Achievement” was recently awarded to Jack G. Marcil by the Association of the Bar for the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Marcil is a member of the Serkland Law Firm, a graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Law, and a native of Sherwood, North Dakota.

Marcil has been recognized in “Best Lawyers in America” since 1987. He has been recognized as a “Super Lawyer” and has been selected in the Top Five list in the “Great Plains Super Lawyers.” Additionally, Chambers has recognized him as a leading litigator in North Dakota.

Over the last fifteen years, Marcil has shifted the focus of his practice from litigation to mediation. He has mediated over 2,000 cases and has been recognized by the American College of Civil Trial Mediators and is a member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, both invitation only organizations. The State Bar Association of North Dakota presented Marcil with its Distinguished Service Award in 2007. He is respected for his skill and integrity throughout North Dakota.

Wetch Joins American Bar Foundation

Joseph Wetch has been accepted as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Membership in The Fellows of the ABF is limited to one percent of the lawyers admitted to practice in the United States and its territories. Mr. Wetch has been with Serkland Law Firm for 14 years and practices in the areas of personal injury, commercial litigation, insurance, and medical malpractice defense.

Serkland Names Peter Zuger as Shareholder

Serkland Law Firm, with offices in Fargo and Bismarck, is pleased to announce the selection of Peter W. Zuger as a shareholder in the Firm. Peter’s practice is centered primarily on litigation where he focuses on commercial, corporate, products liability, insurance defense and professional malpractice defense. Before joining Serkland Law Firm in 2009, he served as a law clerk for the South Central Judicial District in Bismarck. A native of Bismarck, he graduated from the University of Mary and went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law. Peter is the chair of the North Dakota Pattern Jury Instruction Commission, and he is recognized as a Rising Star in Great Plains Super Lawyers.

Rebecca S. Thiem Joins Serkland Law Firm

Rebecca S. Thiem has joined the Serkland Law Firm in a newly established Bismarck office as an attorney, focusing on commercial and general litigation, business transactions, employment litigation, mediation and arbitration, and professional malpractice defense.

Thiem earned her Juris Doctor Degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law, served as law clerk to Judge Myron Bright at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and has worked in private practice in Bismarck for over 30 years. Thiem is recognized by Chambers USA as Leading Commercial Litigation Lawyer, as well as Leading Lawyer in the area of Labor and Employment; is listed in Best Lawyers in America for Arbitration and Commercial Litigation; and is selected for inclusion in the Great Plains Super Lawyers list.

Beth Pladson Participates in Special Olympics Golf Fundraiser

Beth Pladson, a Serkland Law Firm paralegal, was a Planning Committee volunteer and a participant in the 19th Annual North Dakota Special Olympics Golf Classic fundraising event held at the Oxbow Country Club. The Serkland Law Firm was a sponsor of this event at the Bronze level.

Serkland Law Firm and The Tax Law Office Combine

The Tax Law Office has merged with the Serkland Law Firm and the combined firm will continue to provide legal services under the Serkland Law Firm name. Serkland Law is a well known and nationally recognized law firm located in downtown Fargo that has been in business for 125 years. The Tax Law Office was established in 1995 by Rodger Mohagen and specialized in tax, estate planning and business law. With the combination, clients will have access to a depth of skilled legal professionals and specialized services to further enhance the exceptional representation previously provided by both firms.

Rodger Mohagen and Bart McIlonie, the principals of the Tax Law Office, have joined Serkland Law as “of counsel” attorneys and will continue to provide legal services to clients. James Maring, formerly with the Tax Law Office, has also joined Serkland Law as an associate attorney, along with paralegal Heidi Neumann.

Rodger Mohagen and Bart McIlonie will continue to maintain their offices at the former Tax Law Office at 1531 32nd Ave. S., Fargo, North Dakota. In addition to their work for Serkland Law, Rodger Mohagen and Bart McIlonie will continue to provide ESOP and tax consulting services through Core Consulting Group.


Joseph Wetch Jr Recognized with Honor

Former Serkland Attorney Lowell Lundberg Dies

Lowell W. Lundberg, 85, of Fargo, died on August 3, 2013. Born in 1927 in Edmore, North Dakota, Lowell was raised in Grafton.

Lowell served in the US Army, the North Dakota Army Reserve, and the North Dakota Air National Guard. He entered the military as soon as he was eligible and retired 32 years later as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Lowell was a proud alumni of the University of North Dakota undergraduate and school of law. After earning his JD from UND, Lowell joined the Serkland Lundberg Erickson Marcil and McLean law firm in 1956; he became a shareholder in 1960. His practice areas included real estate, corporate, and contract law.

A lifelong Tau Kappa Epsilon, fiscal conservative and classic car enthusiast, Lowell passed along his love of cars and the military, his passion for education, and appreciation for the Greek system, to his grandchildren and step grandchildren.

Lowell is survived by his wife, Marlys; sister, Lyn Webb; brother, Loren (Priscella) Lundberg; daughters, Diane (Martin) Ramos, and Karen (Ron Costello) Lundberg; stepchildren, Stephanie (Luigi) Paruccini and James (Ellen) Ford and several beloved grandchildren, step grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Favorable Jury Verdict

Joseph Wetch secured a substantial jury verdict in favor of one of the firm's clients on August 22. After being seriously injured as a passenger in a one car rollover, the case went to trial. The jury awarded the client in excess of $271,000.

Longtime Serkland Attorney Armond Erickson Dies

Armond G. Erickson, 85, Fargo, ND died at home on Friday May 11, 2012.

He was born May 8, 1927 to Ed and Cora (Anderson) Erickson in Center Township, Nelson County North Dakota. He was raised on a rural farm near Mapes; graduating from McVille High School in 1944. He attended Aakers Business College in Grand Forks and was an accomplished amateur baseball player/pitcher in the 1940’s and 50’s and he was inducted in the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.

He served in the US Army Infantry from 1950–1952 with one year active duty in Korea. He attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with a B.S in Accounting in 1955 and in 1958 he received his Juris Doctorate Degree in Law. After graduating he served as a clerk for US Circuit Court Judge Charles J. Vogel from 1958–1959. He then joined Cupler, Tenneson, Serkland, & Lundberg Law Firm in 1959 and practiced there until he retired in 1997.

In 1981 he was appointed Honorary Consul to Norway for North Dakota which he served as until his retirement. In 1989 he received the appointment as Knight First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit by King Olav V of Norway.

He is survived by his wife Nancy (Frank) of 51 years. The Memorial Service was held Friday, May 18, 2012 at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND.
