Tim Richard obtained his law degree in 1997 from the University of North Dakota School of Law. During law school, Tim was a member of the Board of Editors for the North Dakota Law Review and a member of the Environmental Law Society, where he participated in a national environmental law moot court competition. Tim is a member of the Order of the Coif, an honor reserved for the top 10% of a graduating law school class. After graduating from law school, Tim served as a law clerk to federal Magistrate Judge Karen Klein in U.S. District Court in Fargo, North Dakota, before joining the Serkland Law Firm in 1999. Tim has been a shareholder at the Serkland Law Firm since 2006.
Tim has extensive experience and expertise in Trusts & Estates, Real Estate and Business Law. Tim helps numerous individuals, family farms and businesses with complex estate, tax and family and business succession planning issues, as well as real estate transactions, contracts and other business governance and operational matters. He is a Fellow in the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel, an Accredited Estate Planner (AEP) by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils, and was recognized by Best Lawyers in America as the 2023 Real Estate Lawyer of the Year in Fargo and 2024 Trusts and Estates Lawyer of the Year in Fargo . Tim is also a member and past president of the Red River Valley Estate Planning Council. Tim has presented numerous programs and seminars to clients, attorneys and other professionals on estate planning, probate, real estate and business issues.
Tim grew up on his family’s farm near Fargo, North Dakota and is an avid outdoorsman. He is the past president of the Dakota Southeast Chapter of Pheasants Forever, where he is active in many conservation projects and promotes youth hunting and shooting sports.
